In today’s lesson we were given the tasks of researching different types of progression after this course has been completed. Using a variety of referenced sources which includes employment and University. This lesson will start to help me set in stone what I want to do after this course and what I want to do in the future.

Option 1- Staffordshire University

University is one of the most common and most likely one of the best options to go to once leaving college. University provides a wide variety of opportunities and allows the individual to choose what course they want to go into depth of. As there are such a wide variety there is something for every individual.

One college I decided to look into for a Games Design course was Staffordshire University. They offer 37 different Games Design courses from Postgraduates and Undergraduates providing an opportunity for everyone.

This is the link for the source I used to gather this information to help me ensure what I want to do after the course I complete in college.

Pro’s:

Pro’s of this university course is that it allows me to be noticed easier in the gaming industry which aids me in getting a job within this industry better. It is also a massive opportunity to provide me with with social skills. Socialising allows me to gain experience and gain confidence. Gaining confidence will allow me to present more comfortably e.g. for a job and class presentations. Leading on from the gains of socialisation skills it will massively help my communication, teamwork and problem solving skills as a group or team.

I will not just gain social skills but highly advance with my skills in the Games Design industry itself. These are the descriptions of the things I will learn to further acknowledge me of what the course is about and how I will advance to learn these and become more knowledgeable and skilled at what I do.

Con’s:

One of the biggest problems of going to Staffordshire University is that the financial issues I will come up against. As this college is so far away from home I will have to rent an apartment up near Staffordshire and pay for my own resources. The distance will be too great to travel and expensive to provide for myself. Another con of this course in University is that it does not specify what grade I need or tariff points I need to enter this course. It takes around 3 hours to travel there without no traffic.

University of South Wales

One of the other Universities which I decided to look into was the University of South Wales. This University also provides a load of various courses for an individual to go into. This University also classes as one of the top universities in Wales.

It provides a video which shows what they include and do within the course and presents some of the best work completed and successful from this course. They also provide details for the course immediately when you click onto the link given which instantly gives you an indication of what this is all about.

Pro’s

One of the massive pro’s for this University is that I can still live at home whilst going to this university. This will help me greatly as I would not be financially stable enough to move out and provide for myself just yet. As it is only a 50 minute drive away I can travel back and forth really easily which would be good on petrol too. This would help me save a lot of money. Another pro for this University is not just because it is a lot closer but it focuses more on what I seek and would like to do and what I enjoy doing currently. One more pro about this University is that it provides you with what the course is about, the details of the course, entry requirements, fees and funding, application tips and careers within the industry. Having this on their page allows me to be able to know exactly what I am going to be studying etc…

Cons

One of the cons of this course for University is that as the course length is 3 years and it is £9,000 per year. It will come out as a total of £27,000 which is a lot of money for studying a course. This means if I earn a salary of less than £25,000 annually it will take 25+ years to repay the debt I owe the university.
